What you need to know about Toronto Airport

Toronto Pearson International (YYZ) is the busiest airport in Canada, having served nearly 40 million passengers in 2014 alone. It is located near Mississauga, Ontario, some 25 kilometers (15 miles) northwest of downtown Toronto.

YYZ serves more than 50 major airlines and serves as a hub for several Canadian carriers. It is also the principal hub for Air Canada. Flights to and from the airport connect Toronto with cities throughout the nation and with more than 150 locations throughout the world. YYZ actually handles more international passengers than any airport in North America except New York's John F. Kennedy International.

In the early 1950s, the airport pioneered the principle of preclearance in flights to the U.S. This allows passengers to board at Toronto in the same way they would a U.S. domestic flight, with customs and immigration issues being handled beforehand. This is particularly helpful when flying to cities in the U.S. that lack such facilities.

YYZ has two terminals, designated as 1 and 3, which serve its local, domestic and international passengers. An infield terminal built during the construction of Terminal 1 is not currently in use. In order to enhance the visiting experience, numerous shops, bars and restaurants are available in both terminals. These include Cafe Calabria and Mozaiks Cafe, both located in Terminal 1, and Cafe Ritazza and Coyote Jacks, which are in Terminal 3. Hotels in the area include the Hilton Toronto Airport, the Marriott Toronto Airport and the Sheraton Gateway, the latter of which is connected to both terminals with a "people moving" train.
